Burgas Airport to Undergo €50 Million Runway Rehabilitation in Winter 2025/26

Burgas Airport is preparing for a €50 million runway renovation, scheduled to take place during the winter months of 2025/26. Announced by Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD, the project aims to enhance safety, operational efficiency, and readiness for year-round traffic starting in 2026, in line with national and international safety standards.

Key Project Highlights

• Runway Overhaul: Originally built in 1962 and upgraded in 1980, the runway will undergo a complete rehabilitation, including upgrades to drainage systems, surrounding areas, and the installation of a modern airfield lighting system.
• Timing: To minimize disruption to Bulgaria’s critical summer tourism season, the airport will close temporarily for six months, from November 2025 to April 2026. Additional preparatory maintenance will occur in March 2025 during the low-traffic season.
• Additional Investments: The project includes significant investment in apron enhancements to accommodate long-term growth and improve operational efficiency.

Safety and Growth Commitment

Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD emphasized that safety is its top priority. The rehabilitation project is designed to handle growing traffic demands for the next 20 years.
Since assuming the airport concession in 2006, the company has invested over €110 million in infrastructure improvements, transforming Burgas Airport into a modern gateway for airlines and travelers. The current project aligns with the airport’s 2022-2026 Master Plan, developed in collaboration with the Fraport Group, the Bulgarian Ministry of Transport and Communications, and the Municipality of Burgas.

Impact on Tourism and Regional Connectivity

To minimize the impact on the local tourism industry, the construction schedule is limited to winter months, ensuring uninterrupted operations during peak summer travel seasons.
Fraport Twin Star plans to maintain open communication with media, local authorities, and tourism stakeholders to keep the public informed about the project. This investment underscores Fraport Twin Star’s commitment to enhancing Burgas Airport as a safe, modern hub for both passenger and cargo traffic, bolstering regional connectivity and supporting economic growth for years to come.
